About The Book "Madness or Masterpiece"

ABOUT THE BOOK

In a world this broken, who’s actually sane?

Step inside the mind of Lucien, a man diagnosed with schizophrenia, and suddenly the rules you thought grounded reality begin to wobble. What society calls “madness” reveals insight. What appears chaotic unfolds as order. And what you believed about suffering, perception, and sanity… may never feel the same.

Through the intertwined perspectives of Lucien, his former partner Laura, and his psychiatrist Dr. Wynn, Madness or Masterpiece shows how the same mental mechanisms that shape severe psychological suffering also quietly steer everyday anxiety, overthinking, and burnout — closer than you’d imagine.

This is not a self-help book that preaches or tells you what to do. It’s a daring, one-of-a-kind experiment: part novel, part self-help guide, entirely unique. Instead of offering answers, it challenges your assumptions. It turns normal thinking upside-down, asks uncomfortable questions, and invites you to see life through a mind that experiences reality differently — revealing calm, clarity, and profound insight where others see only chaos.

If you’ve ever wondered what separates the “sane” from the “unwell,” or questioned whether your own reality is as fixed as it seems, this book will leave you thinking, unsettled, and illuminated — all at once.

Prepare to enter a world where perception is fluid, suffering is reframed, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Madness or Masterpiece is a book that doesn’t just change how you think — it changes how you see.

~ Doctor Stik ~

This isn’t another self-help book telling you what’s wrong with you. And it’s definitely not one you’ll skim, highlight, and forget. It is a book that’s structured around three people and three perspectives.

  • A man whose mind has drifted beyond shared reality.
  • A woman who believes herself stable, rational, and intact.
  • And a doctor trained to hold the space between insight and illness.

What emerges from their conversations is not a diagnosis, a cure, or a conclusion, but something far more unsettling.

In a world that divides people neatly into “the sane” and “the unwell,” these exchanges begin to loosen assumptions most of us never question: linear time, a coherent world, familiar definitions of freedom, happiness, and clarity. As the dialogue deepens, these ideas tilt, invert, and rearrange themselves — not into chaos, but into an unfamiliar kind of order that feels both rational and disturbing.

At times, a conversation with someone considered “insane” does not collapse meaning.
It opens a new world for those of us who consider ourselves “sane.”

Who this book is for ?

This Book Is For You If...

  • 🌀 You often feel like your mind is one step ahead of your life — replaying the past or rehearsing the future
  • 🕰️ You notice time doesn’t always feel linear, and the present is strangely hard to stay in
  • 🤔 You question what “normal,” “sane,” or “successful” actually means, but rarely say it out loud
  • 🌫️ You feel clear on the outside, yet quietly disoriented on the inside
  • 🧠 You’re curious about the mind, but wary of easy explanations or self-help promises
  • 🩵 You sense that anxiety, overthinking, or emotional numbness might share a deeper structure
  • 👀 You’ve had moments where a conversation, a thought, or a silence tilted your view of reality
  • 🌗 You want understanding, not fixing — language that names what you feel without reducing it
  • 💬 Or… you simply feel “off,” as if you’re living slightly beside your own life, and don’t yet know why

What we call sanity is often just the version of reality we’ve learned to agree on.

TEAM

I’m Doctor Stik, the pen name I write under — though in daily life, I’m Anh Nguyen, a medical doctor (M.D.), a neurosurgeon and former Director at the Institute for Applied Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience (IPPN). My work sits at the meeting point of medical science, clinical psychology, numerology and Buddhist contemplative practice, and my mission is simple: to help people understand and break the psychological loops that keep them exhausted, overwhelmed, and disconnected from themselves.

This book emerges from the same lifelong commitment that has shaped all of my work: to look deeply at human suffering without spectacle, without reduction, without labelling, and without asking the reader to become someone else in order to heal…

FAQ

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a book about mental illness, or about everyday life?

At its core, this book is about life. It only borrows mental illness as a lens – not as its destination.

The story uses psychosis to reveal something most of us never notice: the same mechanisms that appear in extreme states also operate subtly in everyday experience. Anxiety, overthinking, dissociation, and emotional disconnection are not separate phenomena. They are milder expressions of the same underlying process. The similarity is often surprising and unsettling.

A smaller part of the book does engage directly with mental illness, and it does so with seriousness and care. It does not romanticize psychosis or treat it as metaphor alone, and it does not dismiss the need for professional treatment. But its larger purpose is to help readers recognize how easily the mind can drift from the present, even in lives that appear stable and functional.

No. The book is written for general readers.

Psychological and neuroscientific ideas are present, but they are introduced through dialogue, story, and everyday language rather than technical explanation. Readers with a background in psychology may recognize familiar concepts, but no prior knowledge is required to follow or engage with the book.

It is neither in the usual sense.

The book uses a fictional narrative and conversations to explore real psychological mechanisms, but it does not function as a self-help guide. There are no exercises, steps, or promises of change. Instead, it offers orientation — a way of seeing how perception, meaning, and suffering take shape.

The book is not designed to destabilize, but it may slightly unsettle assumptions.

It doesn’t ask readers to doubt their sanity or reinterpret their experiences as pathological. Instead, it invites careful reflection on how perception works. For many readers, this leads to greater steadiness, not confusion — because understanding how the mind constructs meaning often restores orientation rather than eroding it.

It is intentionally all three,  without fully belonging to any one category.

The book uses story and dialogue as its primary vehicle, while quietly drawing from neuroscience and philosophy. These perspectives are not presented as competing explanations, but as different ways of pointing to the same human process. Readers are not asked to master theories, only to recognize patterns.

Readers who are thoughtful, observant, and quietly curious often connect most deeply.

This includes people who function well on the outside but sense something unresolved beneath the surface, as well as readers interested in psychology, consciousness, or the nature of reality — without wanting quick answers or self-improvement frameworks. The book rewards patience, reflection, and a willingness to sit with ambiguity.

Possibly — but in a different way.

This book does not offer new techniques, exercises, or frameworks to apply. It doesn’t compete with therapy or attempt to replace it. Instead, it shifts the angle of attention. Many readers who have done therapy or read extensively find that the book helps them notice how their mind constructs experience, rather than what they should do about it.

For some, this provides a missing layer of understanding — a way to recognize patterns that continue even after insight has been gained. For others, it simply names something they’ve felt but never had language for. In that sense, the book tends to complement prior work rather than repeat it.

Yes. My most recent book is Release. Return. Reside: The 3R Principle, which you can find on this website.

I’ve also written two well-known books in Vietnamese — The Doctor of Numerology and The Secret Language of Life. These earlier works focus on inner reflection and personal healing, and have reached many readers seeking greater self-understanding.

Madness or Masterpiece marks a different direction in my writing, turning toward dialogue, perception, and the nature of reality itself.
